Bahrain announces the release of Qatar, a bodybuilding champion who was detained on a hunting trip

The Bahraini Ministry of Interior said on Thursday that Qatar has released a bodybuilding champion and two other Bahrainis who were detained while they were on fishing trips.

On Sunday, Manama called on the Qatari authorities to release bodybuilder Sami Al-Haddad, who was arrested along with another citizen on Friday in the third such incident in recent months, which occurred after Bahrain and its Arab allies agreed to end a political conflict with Doha.

The Ministry of Interior said in a statement that the Qatari authorities also released a Bahraini sailor who was arrested in December. She added that their boats are still being held.

“After our embassy in the sisterly Sultanate of Oman reported the arrival of Bahraini citizens to the Sultanate, the Ministry of Interior contacted them and checked on them,” she added.

There was no immediate comment from the Qatari authorities.

On Sunday, Manama said it would open its airspace to Qatar from January 11th.

A senior Emirati official said restoring diplomatic ties would take more time as the parties rebuild trust.
